Star Formation and Merging in Massive Galaxies at z < 2

Observing massive galaxies at various redshifts is one of the most straightforward and direct approaches towards understanding galaxy formation. There is now largely a consensus that the massive galaxy (M∗ > 10 11 M⊙ ) population is fully formed by z ∼ 1, based on mass and luminosity functions. However, we argue that the latest data can only rule out number and mass density evolution of a facto...

Star Formation in High Redshift Galaxies

Observations of the high redshift Universe, interpreted in the context of a new generation of computer simulated model Universes, are providing new insights into the processes by which galaxies and quasars form and evolve, as well as the relationship between the formation of virialized, star-forming systems and the evolution of the intergalactic medium. We describe our recent measurements of th...

Constraining Star Formation and AGN in z∼2 Massive Galaxies using High Resolution MERLIN Radio Observations

We present high spatial resolution MERLIN 1.4GHz radio observations of two high redshift (z∼2) sources, RGJ123623 (HDF147) and RGJ123617 (HDF130), selected as the brightest radio sources from a sample of submillimetre-faint radio galaxies. They have starburst classifications from their rest-frame UV spectra. However, their radio morphologies are remarkably compact (<80mas and <65mas respectivel...

Molecular Gas and Star Formation in Local Early-Type Galaxies

The molecular gas content of local early-type galaxies is constrained and discussed in relation to their evolution. First, as part of the ATLAS survey, we present the first complete, large (260 objects), volume-limited single-dish survey of CO in normal local early-type galaxies. We find a surprisingly high detection rate of 22%, independent of luminosity and at best weakly dependent on environ...

Measuring Star Formation in Local and Distant Galaxies

Determinations of star formation rates (SFRs) in galaxies utilize indicators at a variety of wavelengths, from the X–ray to the radio. Many indicators have been defined in response to specific needs. For instance, when new populations of galaxies are discovered using a new wavelength window or improved observing techniques/instruments in a certain waveband, there is a push to investigate whethe...
